unknown Conopid

Hi,
I am brand new to the forum. Can anyone ID this Conopid ? I think it could be a Physocephala sp but I only mananged one shot before it flew off. Found recently on the chalk grassland margins of Portsdown Hill, Hampshire. I have a grid ref if required.
regards

Re: unknown Conopid

Hi Stuart,
Yes it is indeed a Physocephala, P rufipes!

I sure Dave Clements would like the record, his details are under the
Conopid recording scheme.

Cheers, Mick

Re: unknown Conopid

The Conopid in your picture is Physocephala rufipes. P. nigra has a rather uniformly black thorax and abdomen with some dark brownish patches on thorax and at the tergite 2/3 boundary. P. rufipes is a lighter coloured species that generally has light marks at the front of the thorax, reddish brown tergite 2 and yellow dusting on at least tergites 2, 4 & 5.

Welcome to the forum with its current Chairman Stuart Ball. Who would have thought that there could have been 2 people with such a unique name interested in Diptera in the UK? I hope that no confusion or mix? ups arise.

With best regards,
Malcolm
