Muscid?

Hello

I label this post as 'Muscid' but that's just a guess - is there a definitive feature to separate Muscids from other Diptera?

This fly was found in a small patch of farmland/rough grassland in north Sussex yesterday afternoon. Just under 7mm in length. If anymore photos are required then please let me know.

Thanks, James

Re: Muscid?

It is a female Musca (autumnalis or larvipara). There is rarely only one feature to distinguish a family from another.
Nevertheless, I could try to define Muscidae as :
Calyptrate diptera with a fully developped proboscis,  without a row of strong meral bristles, with A1 not reaching the wing margin, and never shorter than A2. Vein M1+2 can be bent or straight.

Re: Muscid?

Thank you Stephane, there was a lot of what I assumed to be Musca autumnalis about and they seemed chunkier than this one.

I will keep those features in mind when I'm trying to find out which family a fly belongs to!
