Anthomyiidae ID help please

This Anthomyiid was photographed in a boggy field next to a small river in Leicestershire on 28.iv.2019.

Any help with ID greatly appreciated.

Best wishes,
David

Re: Anthomyiidae ID help please

Thanks Tony. That was the species I was favouring but the more I looked at the somewhat variable online images the less sure I became!

What's the best resource for Anthomyiidae?

Re: Anthomyiidae ID help please

Do you mean for images?
Presumably you've looked at the Diptera.info gallery.
There are collections too at https://www.galerie-insecte.org/galerie … ae_02.html and
https://www.biodiversidadvirtual.org/in … 25971.html

Re: Anthomyiidae ID help please

Diptera.info has a gallery which is critically examined by European experts, so you can rely on the identifications - not so with some other collections which are full of nice pics, but labelled with the  wrong species or even family! (Steven Falk's flckr pages are another reliable source, but I'm not sure how many anthomyiids he has at present.)

Re: Anthomyiidae ID help please

Leaving you with two other solutions.
Firstly collect your own images from reliably identified sources and manage them on your own PC.
Secondly for the Recording Scheme organisers to do that same job and to set up a Scratchpad containing reliably identified images. For example http://scathophagidae.myspecies.info/ or http://micropezids.myspecies.info/

Hello,

I think it's a Hylemya vagans male : prealar seta shorter than notopleural seta, black fore tibia, black wing bases, white caliptra

Re: Anthomyiidae ID help please

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Some very useful resources thanks Darwyn. Mostly new to me.

Yes, I looked at diptera.info. That made me doubtful of Hydrophoria lancifer. I don't think Steven has started uploading Anthomyiidae yet.

Thanks for the suggestion of Hylemya vagans Pierre-Yves. I'll look into that one.

Re: Anthomyiidae ID help please

The distribution of hairs on the scutellum, with a bare triangular central patch, suggests Hylemya rather than Hydrophoria.
