Fine Syrphid In Greece

Another query: I photographed this lovely fly in the Peloponnese in May.  It keys out in Stubbs& Falk to the Eristalini - note the unmistakable deep curve in vein R4+5, and veins R1 and R2+3 do not have a common stalk - but is not I think either a Merodon or a Mallota.  Photographs cannot replace detailed description, I know, but I had just a few seconds to snap it and had no collection kit with me.  Any ideas?

Still, most likely a Merodon...

Re: Fine Syrphid In Greece

It is indeed a Merodon, one of many species found in the Eastern Mediterranean Area. I have representatives of more than 20 species from Greece in my collection alone. It is not possible to identify your particular species from your photograph but it bears a resemblence to M. clavipes. The European species of the genus are currently under review by Santos Rojo and Ante Vujic. Expect a paper from them describing many new species from the Mediterranean Area in the medium term!!!
