fly on umbellifer with irridescent purple thorax

I've seen several of these small flies feeding on umbellifer flower heads, in dampish environments. They all seem to have an irridecent purple colour to the thorax. I was thinking perhaps a hover or soldier fly. A more accurate ID would be most welcome.

This is a female Syrphid of the tribe Chrysogasterini, resembling Chrysogaster solstitialis. I would not be confident to name the species precisely on the basis of your photographs.

Thanks Malcolm. Next time I see one I will try and get better photos but at the same time I realise that images are sometimes not good enough and for a better ID you need to look at the genitalia etc.

Re: fly on umbellifer with irridescent purple thorax

The iridescence of some flies is quite remarkable.  I spotted this blue fly from quite a distance but it was caught in a spider's web.  Could it be from the same genus?

No - a fly from a completely different family. Your pictures show a female Chloromyia formosa (Stratiomyidae). The male is also irridescent but thorax is green and the abdomen bronze coloured.

Thank you Malcolm, I have seen a lot of the males on the site.
