Found on heather by marshland today. Looks like Chrysotoxum bicinctum however, the yellow markings are slightly wrong. For instance there are two yellow spots on the top of the thorax and the first yellow stripe on the abdomen has two 'horns' at either end. Can anyone help with the identification please?

Judging by the antennae I would say this is a bee rather than a fly. Genus Nomada perhaps?

Thanks Howard. I did think that at first but then I saw its remarkable resemblance to C. bicinctum and there weren't any exact matches that I could see in my bees book. I'll keep looking though!

Solitary wasp?

It's a wasp (Eumenidae), Ancistrocerus sp. prob gazella, but possibly quadratus. The rolled-up wings are a giveaway.
