How to tell male from female Bombylius major

I thought I'd found a new insect but turned out to be Bombylius major flying while mating. How do you tell female from male? Or is it a case of dissection?

Female Bombylius have the eyes widely separated on top of the head. In the males, the eyes are almost touching on top of the head. In your photo the female is nearer the camera.
