Sphaerophoria?

Hello everyone

Today on a farm in West Sussex near Felbridge I came across one of these hoverflies, which I assume to be a Sphaerophoria of some sort. Can they be done on photographs alone?

Thanks,
James

Re: Sphaerophoria?

Sphaerophoria can only be identified by microscopic examination of males.

That is certainly an oddly marked individual which you have found; I've never seen one like that.

Re: Sphaerophoria?

Thanks Geoff, I'll have to get a specimen of another one then.
