Bristol Insect Fauna

Hello everyone

I would be grateful if someone could help out with the following query.

In Audcent, H. (1932). Bristol Insect Fauna: Diptera (Part V). Annual Report and Proceedings of the Bristol Naturalists' Society, 4th Series, Vol. VII, 358-370

I have Hydrotaea penicillata Rnd. S.(= Somerset), Clevedon (W. = Mr C. J. Watkins), 19/08/1901.

Is this an error as the species doesn't come up on the checklist?

Thank you

Re: Bristol Insect Fauna

I think its inclusion as a British species was an error. It was recorded in the 1945 Check List of Kloet and Hincks, but was not mentioned in the 1976 version. (Nor was it included in Fonseca's Handbook.) I can't find any reference to its formal removal from the British list, but one of the calypterate specialists may know more. If Audcent retained the specimen, it may have ended up at the National Museum of Wales - so someone could check on its true identity.

Re: Bristol Insect Fauna

Perhaps Adrian Plant can help out, not sure if he is still there though?

Re: Bristol Insect Fauna

Adrian has gone to Thailand now. Mark Pavett is probably the best contact at Cardiff.

Re: Bristol Insect Fauna

I understand that John Deeming (retired Diptera curator) comes in most days and he also may be able to help.
