Thricops query

This muscid has what I take to be setulose hairs on the apical margins of the hind coxae (see photo) so should be Azelia (clearly not) or Thricops. But I cannot key it out. Found on ivy blossom in Berrow, SW Worcestershire Oct 2017. Help would be much appreciated. I am uploading 4 images, but last time I tried multiple images not all appeared; in hope. Martin Skirrow

Re: Thricops query

Hi Martin, I'm pretty much a muscid novice but I think the hind coxae character refers to the posterior surface, ie. the face closest to the abdomen. Your photo looks to be looking at the anterior face.

Re: Thricops query

Thanks Steve, I see exactly what you mean. I have checked and confirm there are no setal hairs on the posterior face or edge. Our local dipterist thought the photos looked like a Helina sp. and going through the Fonseca keys again it keyes out very well as H. impuncta. It matches the numerous on-line images extremely well. I must say that Fig 6J in the Fonseca keyes misled me; the orientation is not clear to me anyway. Thanks again. Martin

Your comment, Laurence, has just come through. Problem solved. Will record the finding. Many thanks, Martin
