Welcome

Welcome to the Dipterists Forum's Wiki. It has the following sections so far:

What is a Wiki?

A Wiki is a website which allows its users to add and edit content collectively. “Wiki wiki” means “rapidly” in the Hawaiian language.

Why does Dipterists Forum need a Wiki?

The Forum has several projects on the books that might benefit from the facilities of a Wiki to allow members to contribute their knowledge and expertise. For example, “Adopt a species” was announced by Barbara Ismay in Bulletin No. 64 with the idea of asking people to contribute to the conservation of BAP and other threatened Diptera species. One of the tasks people are asked to help with is assembling what is known about the biology, distribution and ecology of these species. A Wiki page for each BAP species where members can add their ideas and comments is one way of contributing to this process.

Who can edit the Wiki?

This is the web-site of the Dipterists Forum, so I have set it up so that anyone can view our Wiki, but you need to be a member of Dipterists Forum (i.e. logged in to this web-site as a “DF member”) to edit the pages.

When should I edit stuff?

Please edit a page only if you can improve it. This might be to make simple correction to the spelling and grammar, to correct things you consider are factual errors, or to contribute new information. Perhaps you have come across something in the literature that does not seem to be mentioned, or you have some field observations of your own to contribute.

How should I edit stuff?

  1. Click the [Edit] button at the bottom right-hand corner of the section you want to edit. You will only see these [Edit] buttons, if you are logged in as a “DF member”.
  2. Edit the text. See syntax for details about how text is formatted.
  3. If it is only a minor change (e.g. correcting a spelling mistake), then tick the “Minor changes” box at the bottom of the page. If it is a more significant edit, then please put a comment in the “Edit summary” box to explain the change and why you made it.
  4. Click the [Save] button to save your changes.

If you want to learn how to add and edit text, practice your skills and try out some of the more complicated facilities, use the playground. This is an area of the Wiki set up specially to allow people to practice editing and the content is not kept.
