Tabanus sudeticus
I would like to add my sighting of Tabanus sudeticus to the records. Please read more about this "dark behemothic horsefly" here http://naturenet.net/blogs/index.php/20 … assive_fly It truly was a beast!

I will add my sighting of one of these. Hedge End, near Southampton. It flew in to the house this morning (27-6-10). There is no mistaking what it was - a big, scary beast of a fly...

I will add my sighting at Connel, Argyll today 30/06/2010. It was trying to bite the front leg of a pony on my croft and the noise of its flying around first attracted my attention. Huge is the word... I would estimate 30-40mm body length as I was able to watch it for some time when it alighted.

I found this particular horsefly near Gatehouse of Fleet in Galloway, South East Scotland. It was sitting still on a path and my husband put his finger near it to see if it was alive, it then flew up and struck him hard on the hand. A kind lady from the Natural History Museum confirmed what we had found as we sent her a close up photo. It was a really impressive looking beast, it seemed to have a beak and apparently it also has a vicious bite.

Thanks to various websites including this one I now know that the fearsome beastie I and other half evicted from Machrie Bay Tearoom, Isle of Arran, on 19th July 2013, was a Tabanus sudeticus. I have a few photographs of it if they are of any use. I believe the tearoom had several of these insects around last summer. Didn't see any on my visit this year, though.
