Keys to British Empididae and Hybotidae - Free downloads
I stumbled across some very useful looking keys to Empids and Hybots on the Cheshire LRC website:

How have you got on with these keys so far?
I ask as after today's first meeting of the Devon Fly Group I searched online for Collin's keys to Empididae this evening to no avail.

Keys to Empididae by Collin will not be on the web. They were published as a three volume work by Cambridge University Press in 1961.
The keys from the link above are useful for the Empids (particularly genera Empis and Rhamphomyia to species) and as stated above are based on Collin's keys (which were not illustrated in the same way).

I find them very good indeed...as said, they are basically Collin, but with a useful little diagram at each stage in the key. Give them a go!

Thanks Brian. I meant that I was looking for a copy I could purchase online. Martin Drake recommended this book to me yesterday so I tried to find a copy.

Volumes 2 and 3 are available from Pemberley Books at £12 per volume.
For identification purposes only the keys from the link may be all you need. These keys are those covered in Volume 2 - mainly Rhamphomyia and Empis.
Volume 2 also covers some Hybotidae (Volume 1 covers the others which with taxonomic changes are now in Hybotidae). Volume 3 covers Hilara and the remainder of the Empidae. If you had Volume 2 you would get additional diagrams including genitalia, and full species descriptions. As always there are taxonomic name changes, but nothing that you will not be able to deal with (e.g. that former genera are now subgenera of Empis). Volume 1 is generally not obtainable - I got mine secondhand from ebay or Abe Books.
