I have created an online key to European species of Stilpon. It is not complete yet, as there are a number of undescribed species in the Mediterranean (some of which I have seen, some not). Any comments are welcome. http://www.online-keys.net/infusions/ke … p?key_no=4

Has anyone got a recommendation for a field guide to British species? New to this subject and would be grateful for any advice.

A field guide to British species of what? Stilpon? Then you can use the linked key, but for Stilpon you can hardly call it a field guide as most species will need examination under a microscope to be identified...

Dear Richard,
If you are looking for a key to British families, you can download a test version from this website if you are a member of Dipterists Forum. You can find this under 'Forums' and there go to 'Test keys and other unpublished material' and go the posting from Stuart titled 'British families of Diptera'. Otherwise I would recommend the family key by Pjotr Oosterbroek: Oosterbroek, P. 2006. The European Families of the Diptera: Identification, diagnosis, biology. KNNV Publishing, Utrecht. You can by it from Pemberley Books here in the UK.
If you mean keys to Empidoidea - just let me know what you have already and where you stand with this group.
Good luck,
Barbara Ismay
